Personal conjugation

There are six persons in Finnish. They are formed by adding an ending after the stem of the verb.

The endings are:

kysyä (to ask)

singular plural
minä kysyn (I ask)me kysymme (we ask)
sinä kysyt (you ask)te kysytte (you ask)
hän kysyy (he/she asks)he kysyvät (they ask)

The 3rd singular form (he/she) is marked by long vowel. If the word is short, and there are already two vowels, the 3rd form is the stem.

For example: syö-dä: minä syön, sinä syöt, hän syö (not *syöö).

Different types of verbs has a different stem. More on article verb types.

Because verb conjugation indicates the subject, personal pronouns can also be left out:

minä puhun suomea = puhun suomea
me puhumme suomea = puhumme suomea
